How to Road Trip around the USA

We have made five cross country trips, and have just embarked on our sixth, so I consider myself to be something of an expert on this subject. Every year we have done this, we have saved more money than the previous year. How is that possible you ask? I will tell you. The secret is having a lot of hotel points or credit card points that you can use for hotels. The other secret is optimizing those points in the best way possible. For example, if you are looking for a hotel in a particular city that happens to be expensive (Seattle, for instance), use points for those hotels.

This year we are going to be on the road for a month. We used 300,000 points to book our hotels. We generally stay at the lower end hotels by Hilton and Marriott, but throw in a few nice hotels along the way. Some examples are The Hilton Scottsdale Resort and Villas, where we booked a two night stay in a two bedroom villa for 122,000 points; or the Ritz Carlton San Francisco, which we booked for 2 nights for 100,000 points. We also booked hotels in Seattle, Vancouver, BC, Beaverton, OR, Redding, CA, Kalispell, MT, Sioux Falls, SD. Good credit cards to do this with are the Marriott Bonvoy American Express card and the Hilton Aspire American Express card, which give you points every time you make purchases using your card.

Again, this works if you make all your purchases on the cards, in order to maximize the most points possible. Stay tuned as we road trip around the USA! #travel #luxury #family #roadtrip #hilton #marriott #ritzcarlton
